Ancient Romans revered the moon and its mysterious power to affect the tides and mark the passage of time. Moonstone, they believed, was solidified moonbeam fallen to Earth that contained traces of these powers beneath its shimmering surface. The stone brought luck, love, fertility, and a host of other benefits to the devout when they offered it at the altars of the lunar goddesses, Luna, Diana, and Juno. Moonstone empowered priests and priestesses to channel the messages of the gods and divine the future.
Nature must have had this in mind when it stacked alternating layers of minerals to form moonstone. Light, from the moon or otherwise, bounces between the layers and results in a lustrous sheen that seems to move across the surface. Tiny fissures between the layers create the appearance of a lunar landscape or a cloud-studded sky. Very fine specimens display a cat’s eye effect, almost as though a single moonbeam really were trapped inside the stone.
Moonstone is still associated with lunar powers and has come to be known as a divine feminine symbol, a stone of tranquility and balance as well as sensuality and intuition. Moonstone can attract faithful lovers or reconcile an estranged couple. Its powers are heightened during a full moon. Keep moonstone where it can recharge in the glow of its namesake and provide a stable, fulfilling love live.
