Western central Africa, where the equator bisects the continent, is home to a lush, tropical savanna climate. A wide variety of timber grows there, including the makore tree. Reaching heights of 200 feet and with trunks from four to six feet in diameter, makore can be milled into long, sturdy planks. The heartwood ranges from pink to reddish brown, sometimes with dark striations that form intriguing patterns in finished pieces. Craftsmen often refer to it as African cherry wood and use it for projects ranging from cabinetry to airplane and vehicle finishes. Makore wood brings together the elements of fire and earth and is a strong protector.
